Current Research

Mauna Loa, Hawaii

The goal of this project is to explore the mechanisms of mixing within mafic magmatic mushes. We are studying the the 1868 eruption of Mauna Loa, a picritic basalt containing a high abundance of olivine crystals. We are using the electron microprobe to analyze these crystals and are looking for populations of crystals that erupted in a single, 4-day eruption. We will also incorporate the multiphase fluids modeling, and you can check out modeling results on our YouTube page
